Thanksgiving Edition: Weekly Connection!

Due to the shortened work week and Thanksgiving holiday, I am sending this out a bit early.

This evening at 5:30 is the annual Open Door Thanksgiving dinner.  Folks have been here for most of the day dicing, chopping, peeling and cooking!  If you are in the area and want to get an early start on feasting, you are welcome to come by for dinner!  Georgia and Marie assure me there is plenty of food for everyone.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving!  I hope you enjoy your day and find some to relax and give thanks for the many blessings that surround you!

Saturday at 9:00 is the first meeting of the new Women’s Study.  I am not sure which room we will be meeting in, so please look for the ladies chatting!  We will be using the book ” Calm My Anxious Heart.”  I think everyone has picked up their book – we have one or two extra, so if you did not sign-up , there is till time. All ladies are welcome!

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  This is the First Sunday of Advent – (it sneaks right up on us!)  The Chadwick Family will be doing the reading this Sunday and lighting the Advent candle.  Our Helping Hands offering will also be received.  From time to time I like to remind you that those funds are used at Pastor Kevin’s discretion to help those in our church family or the local community that may have a financial need.  Look for the envelope in your bulletin on Sunday if you typically participate in this.  Coffee time follows worship.  Thanks to everyone who has stepped forward to help with everything that is needed to make coffee time run smoothly.  Clean-up, food donations and clean-up are all part of the task – it’s great to see people working  together!

Monday evening at 7:27 is Young Life.  Enthusiastic teens meet on our top floor!  Do you know a high schooler that would benefit from good friends, fun and relevant, current Bible words?  See Meg for details.

The BIG event that you need to keep in mind is…The Christmas Fair…next Saturday, December 5th at 9:00.  Barbara Sweeny is chairing the FaIr this year.  Here is the latest from Barbara:

The Christmas Fair is nearly upon us! (Dec 5th, 9:00-3:00). Have you signed up yet? See the sign up sheets in the Fellowship Hall after church on Sunday.  Please let me know if you are around during the day on Thursday – I need some hearty souls to move things so people can work on Friday.  We will be doing the bulk of the set up on Friday and then need helpers all day on Saturday. You do not have to commit to the whole day – even an hour or two is great. If you are not a particularly social person, helping to clean up on Saturday (starting at 3:00) is a way to be a special blessing!  Most of all, come to the Fair and do some Christmas shopping, enjoy the fellowship, stay for lunch, and bring a friend! Please let me know if you can help: Barbara Sweeny (barbrialan@yahoo.com)

MANY thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the Open Door dinner on Wednesday evening.  Many people spent a chunk of today here working.  Others did prep work at home and still others are expected shortly to help serve.  THANK YOU!

Our Blessing Bag ministry continues to grow!  We have given out 60 filled backpacks to women in challenging situations.  Most recently 10 were given to women caught up in trafficking –  a very real problem right in our area.  We have also been handling requests from local families needing some help with Christmas.  THANK YOU to our WISH ladies who are supplying Christmas for one family. Donna Wood has been in contact with another family that needs some help with Christmas things for little ones – please speak to her if you are interested in lending a hand.

There is a Church Work Day planned for Saturday, December 12th from 9:00-Noon.  This is to help prepare our church for the Christmas season.  The Fair will be behind us and this will be a good time to get some extra cleaning and tidying done.  I know this is a busy time of year, but if you are able to come by for a bit of time, it will be a big help.  Thanks!

From Pastor Kevin & Sharon: “Once again, by your kindness and love, you have touched our hearts. We are so blessed to be part of this wonderful church family.”   Pastor Kevin & Sharon

Coming soon:

  • Sunday, December 6th   Kids Team meeting following worship
  • Friday, December 11th  Singspiration
  • Saturday – December 12th  Work Day

Serving on Sunday:

  • Ushers:  Rich Carter, Steve Carter, Sandy Habib, Georgia Shaw

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day!

November 19 Weekly Connection

Hi everyone,  Hope you are having a good week!  This is a very busy week here at UCN as I am sure it is for you.  Please read through this email and make note of the things that pertain to you.

First on the list is …Pie Day!  Thank you to everyone who has ordered a pie or contributed supplies!  Saturday morning at 9:00, the kitchen and Veno Hall will be abuzz with baking!  Our WISH group sponsors this event but if you  are interested in helping out or seeing what all the activity is about, you are welcome to stop by!  The pies will be ready for pick-up on Sunday morning during coffee time.  Look for the display table in Veno Hall.  The cost of each pie is $10.00.

Sunday morning at 10:00 is our worship service.  This is Thanksgiving Sunday and we do indeed have much to be thankful for!  Perhaps some of those things come to mind and you can offer those at our Praise and Prayer time in the service.  Our choir will be singing, Chris will be playing the piano and Pastor Kevin will bring an encouraging message.  Kids Connection meets as usual.  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall and the Bible study will meet in the church parlor.  I hope you are able to join us on Sunday morning!

This Sunday we have a great thanksgiving activity for kids during kids connection, and will have a brief Thanksgiving themed family rally after the worship service for kids, parents and older siblings!

Sunday at 3pm in the welcome center there will be a casual afternoon tea for new moms with little ones younger than a year. Moms can come with or without little ones, and nursing is welcomed!

If you’ve been following United Church of Norwood on social media- you can now also follow us on Instagram: unitedchurchofnorwood

Our Open Door Thanksgiving dinner is Wednesday evening at 5:30.  If you volunteered to contribute a turkey, please speak to Georgia or Marie on Sunday to be sure they know!   I am unaware of any other meal needs, but you can check with Georgia and Marie on that as well.  You are welcome to join our Open Door guests for dinner here at 5:30 too!

Ladies – if you are involved with the new Bible Study, please see me for your book.  The first get-together will be Saturday, November 28th at 9:00.  Please read Chapter 1 in preparation.  Cost of the book is $12.00.

THE CHRISTMAS FAIR IS COMING!  Christmas Fair, Dec 5th: Please see the table in the Fellowship Hall for signup sheets, fair posters if you have a place to post them (Perks and the library come to mind!), and raffle tickets to sell ahead of time. We also have a flyer to help you with gift basket suggestions. Shannon Thomas has kindly agreed to run the bake table again, please let her know if you can bake or want to help. Do think about how you might be able to help the day of the fair, as well as ahead of time. One area that needs lots of helpers is preparing the treasurers room. We need folks to move items into the welcome center, sort, clean and price (it would be great if we had different people doing different tasks). With many hands, it is a fun job. Please let me know if you can help. Please be in touch with me if you have suggestions, ideas, or questions (barbrialan@yahoo.com) ~ Barbara Sweeny

As the holidays approach, please keep in mind that the first Sunday of Advent is November 29th.  Communion will be offered that Sunday.

SERVING ON SUNDAY:

Greeter:  Barbara Sulfaro
Ushers:  To be determined
Kids:  Meg, Georgia, Sandy

Nov 13 Weekly Connection

Hope you are having a good week!  As was evidenced by last week’s connection, this is a very busy time of year with lots to keep track of!  Hoping to make this a bit more brief!

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  This is a special service with some wonderful things happening!  As I mentioned, this is our collection day for the shoeboxes.  A table has been set up in the front of the sanctuary to receive your boxes.  The boxes will be delivered to the local drop off center next week.  Thank you to everyone who is participating in this terrific outreach to kids!  Also on Sunday, we will be having a special time during the service as Keira Kelley is dedicated to the Lord.  Our choir has prepared 2 beautiful pieces of music for Sunday.  Pastor continues his series on “What the Church Believes”.  Begin the week ahead with Sunday worship!

Coffee time follows in Veno Hall.  THANK YOU to everyone who has signed up to help out with our coffee needs.  There is still a need for some help with clean-up.  This really does not take a long time – a few people picking things up will go a long way to help!  Take a look and see where you can sign your name.

Have you visited the Pie Table in Veno Hall?  This is the last opportunity to order a pie. Pies will be baked on November 21st and will be ready for pick-up the next day here at church during coffee time. Read the insert in your bulletin on Sunday for the details.  Cindy will be at the display table to answer any questions you may have.

The books for the new Women’s Study have finally been shipped.  There was some delay on their end but I expect them tomorrow or Saturday.  The first meeting of this study will be Saturday, November 28th at 9:00am here at the church.  I am not sure which room we will be using – whichever one is warmest! The cost of the book is $12.

During the month of October we were looking to update contact information in order to create a new church directory for everyone to have.  There are many folks that we have not heard from.  In the next week or so, you will receive an online form where you can fill in your information, if that is convenient for you.  We will also have a hard copy of the current directory available, probably in the Welcome Center, so that you can see what the office has listed and make any changes necessary.  You can also pick up a form from one of the Resource Tables, fill it out and place in the offering plate. We all have different comfort levels and as long as we have your information, however we receive it is good!

The Christmas Fair is fast approaching!  Barbara Sweeny is our go-to person for all the details.  Please read the notice below for some initial info.

Christmas Fair Dec 5th: There will be a table with information up on Sunday where you can sign up and learn more. It is a great way to get to know one another and to reach out to our community as the body of Christ. Some ways you can help ahead of time: Pick up items for a themed raffle basket; see Meg Nelson if you are interested in collaborating on a baby or new mom basket. Plan your holiday baking to include baked goods and candy for the bake table. You can bless your home and the church by getting rid of clean used items for the treasures room. We can take books, household items, extra Christmas decorations and more – but no TVs, computers, microwaves or clothing please! You can bring items in now and put them behind the curtain on the stage. If you want an electronic copy of the fair poster or the special raffle tickets, I can email you copies. Please be in touch with me if you have suggestions, ideas, or questions (barbrialan@yahoo.com) ~ Barbara Sweeny.

We received a notice this week from Hessco Elder Services.  They are in need of volunteers to deliver meals in Norwood and Canton as well as other surrounding communities.  Please see the notice on the bulletin board at the Nahatan Street entrance for all the details.

For the last few weeks we have been praying for Deb Eagles’ Uncle Tom.  He is undergoing surgery again today for toe amputations.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

Serving on Sunday:
Greeter :  Jessica Eagles
Ushers:  Jim Malone, Bob Russell
Kids:  Meg, Anna, Shannon

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday morning!

November 6 Weekly Connection!

Hope you are loving these summer days of November!  I have a lengthy list of things to remind you about.  I am going to try and be brief so I am not just duplicating the Sunday bulletin.  This is a busy time of year and there are many things happening and coming up here at church.  Please remember to stay tuned in and be a part of those things that God brings to your mind.

Tomorrow at 9:30 in Veno Hall we will be having a Faith Seeds seminar with Sue Johnson.  Sue was here about a year ago and shared a very moving lesson that she teaches to incarcerated women.  Back by popular demand, Sue will be talking about another series that she presents in prison.  This one is called “I Said Yes”.  Coffee will be available.  Everyone is welcome!

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  Great singing, music from the choir, special offertory from Rachel & Meg and Pastor Kevin continues his message series.  Kids Connection is available for kids of all ages. Following the service, coffee time happens in Veno Hall.  Also, our Building Stewards will be doing a walk-through of the church buildinglooking at the huge amount of space we have here and how it can best be utilized.  Everyone is welcome to walk along and offer your input.  It is easy to see the same things the same way – fresh eyes helps change that!  The walk-through starts in Veno Hall during coffee time.  Look for Pastor Kevin.

We have a lot of gifted people here in our church.  Steve Rudolph is one of those people.  Sunday afternoon at 3:00 Steve will be at the Norwood Library with his “Swing Fever Trio” performing “popular American music from the 30’s to the 50″s”.  I understand this is a very popular event and although there is no charge for admission, registration is required.  Give the library a call at 781.769.0200 ext. 110 or 222.  I am sure Steve would love to see you there!

Council members – please make note of the Council meeting on Monday evening at 7:00 in the Ruth Room.

Young Life also meets on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor. All high schoolers welcome!

Please be sure and visit the display table in Veno Hall for all the details on Pie Day.  Pies will be made on November 21st here at the church and will be available for pick-up the next day.  The cost is $10 for each pie you order.  You can also help out by providing some of the supplies needed.  Cindy Rudolph is manning the display table – please speak to Cindy with any questions.  Thanks for your support!

The Open Door volunteers are still in need of at least three turkeys to roast for the dinner they will be serving on November 25th.  Turkeys that weigh at least 15 pounds are needed.  Please speak to Georgia or Marie if you are able to help out.  AND again…thanks for your support 🙂

Marion Rich requests are due in the church office no later than November 22nd.  We have no wiggle room on this, so your cooperation is appreciated.

OPERATION SHOEBOX – Our collection date is next Sunday, November 15th.  This is a terrific outreach ministry – Please be a part of it!  Supplies available in the Welcome Center.

LADIES – The books for the women’s study have been ordered and I expect to see them at my door in the next few days.  The cost of each book is $12.00.  I will let you know when they arrive.

Don’t forget to take a look at the sign-up outside of the kitchen to help out with coffee time.  We specifically need help with set-up and clean-up.  Thanks to those who have already committed to help out with goodies to share.

A million thanks to Barbara Sweeny for her willingness to “chair” this year’s Christmas Fair which is on Saturday, December 5th.  This is a very challenging task despite the thought that the fair “runs itself”.  There are many details that Barbara will be handling, but your enthusiastic help is needed too!  Here’s some food for though to get things moving:

The Christmas Fair is coming Dec 5th! I know it’s only the beginning of November, but the Fair will be here before we know it! There are many ways that you can help. If you have any interest in helping, behind the scenes, the day of the Fair, in any way at all, please email me (barbrialan@yahoo.com) so I can include you on the team to email ideas with. Just having a group to bounce ideas off is helpful — even if your time is limited. Any and all suggestions are welcome! Specific ways you can help right now are: (1) We need a flyer to post — I thought I would open that up to anyone who likes to create documents. I can send you a Word document with the basic information and you can play. We need that by early next week. (2) We solicit contributions of raffle items from local businesses, like a gift card at Perks or that sort of thing. If you have a connection with a business or person who would like to make a contribution, please let me know. (3) We raffle off theme baskets at the fair — think of something you can provide. You don’t have to assemble the basket yourself, we can do that. You could provide a selection of items that would make a fun gift basket. You will be getting more information on how you can help in the weeks ahead. ~ Barbara Sweeny

Just a reminder that purchasing the altar flowers for Sunday worshipis a nice way to recognize someone special.  The cost is $30.  The flowers are delivered on Saturday afternoon and you are welcome to take them following the Sunday service.  See the sign-up sheet outside of the kitchen…right next to the coffee time sign up 🙂

You will NOT be seeing the insert for updating your contact info in Sunday’s bulletin.  In the next several weeks we will be compiling a new directory.  If you did not fill out a new form, please do so.  Forms are available on the Resource Tables and can be left at the office or placed in the offering plate.  You have no idea how much I appreciate your help!

A friendly reminder…if you are involved in a ministry here at the church or are working on a task, please pick up after yourself.  We have a very large church and it is easy to get side-tracked.  We are so blessed to have this space and we need to be good stewards of that blessing.  Thanks for your help!

Serving on Sunday:

 Greeter – Barbara Sulfaro,

Ushers – Dot Cotter, Barbara Sweeny,

Kids Connection – Meg, Scott & Angela Chadwick

Lots of things to remember aren’t there?  Thanks for reading through and making note of what matters to you.
