Easter Week Connection

After last Sunday’s  wonderful Resurrection service, we hope you enjoyed a blessed week!   Here are some things to keep in mind over the next several days.

This first item we want to mention is Cindy Rudolph’s gallery show on Saturday.   Cindy is a very talented artist and we are blessed to have her share her gift with us here in a variety of ways.  You are welcome to come by anytime between 1-4 pm at WinSmith Mill Marketplace, 61 Endicott Street in Norwood.  The entrance is under the huge flag.  There is a parking lot available.  I think it is to the left of the building.    Live music by Steve Rudolph.  Hope that you are able to set side some time and come by!

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00. Great music, encouraging message from Pastor Kevin and an important time of bringing our praises and concerns for prayer.  This is a Communion Sunday.  Our Helping Hands offering will also be received.  Look for the special envelope in your bulletin if you typically participate in this.  Kids Connection meets and Meg has dedicated volunteers helping out.  Coffee time follows in the fellowship hall.

I want to remind you that prior to worship, you are encouraged to meet in the church parlor for prayer.  Yuniya Simms is the go-to person for this time.  You are welcome to come and go as necessary.    Prayer is a vital part of our lives both individually and as a church family.  Please try and be here as you are able for this important time.  Your heart will be well-prepared for worship at 10:00!

This Sunday is your last opportunity to contribute to our special Easter offering.  Envelopes are still available on the Resource Tables.  Funds can be designated to either church needs or Michelle Hughes for her trip to China.  Please make note on the memo line.

A few needs to consider…

One person has signed up to bring a snack to share for Sunday coffee.   We need a few more items.  If you can pick up something when you are doing your shopping or bake something and bring it with you on Sunday, that would be appreciated.

At our prayer & praise time on Sunday mornings, we currently have 2 people that write down the concerns that are mentioned by the congregation.  We need 2 more people to do this.  Preferably that are sitting in different parts of the sanctuary!  It is difficult to hear sometimes and we don’t want to miss someone’s comments.  This is very simple, just write down the requests that you hear and then give your list to Barbara Sweeny or myself.  We’ll take it from there…thanks.

Special thanks to Meg Nelson, Amy and Sydney Lebow who spent last Saturday afternoon here preparing the cross for Resurrection Sunday.  It looked beautiful!   As one email stated “the decorations fit the wood of the cross and the glory of the day.”  Thank you!

A word of thanks also goes to our WISH group that made beautiful Easter baskets for our homebound friends.  Those were delivered the week before Easter.

Young Life meets on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor.  All high school teens are welcome!  Speak with Meg if you have any questions.

Large print Daily Bread devotionals are available on the Resource Table in the Welcome Center.

Serving this Sunday:
Greeters:  Dick & Joan Ripley
Ushers: Rich Carter, Steve Carter, Buki, Georgia
Kids:  Meg, Deb B., Carolyn, Janna

That is all for now – thank you for being faithful here at United.

Holy Week Connection

An email this morning had the subject line:  “The Empty Cross is Full of Hope”

Good to think about as we remember the final days of Christ’s earthly life.

Here are the opportunities to keep in mind over these next few days of Holy Week: Details can be found in the previous post: Holy Week 2016

Join us in the sanctuary this evening for a time of quiet reflection and meditation as we remember Maundy Thursday.   Communion will be offered.  You are welcome anytime between 6:30 and 8:00.

Our Good Friday service begins at 7:00 tomorrow evening.  Scripture, music and meditation as we remember the sacrifice of Christ.

All of this leads us to Resurrection Sunday!  Our Easter service begins at 10:00 on Sunday morning.  Be sure and be here as we celebrate our risen Savior!  Wonderful music is planned, a great message from Pastor Kevin, a time to share our prayer needs and our answered prayers!  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall.  Why not bring a friend with you?

I want to remind you that prior to worship each Sunday, you are welcome to meet in the church parlor for a time of prayer.  Please speak to Yuniya Simms with any questions.   Prayer is vital to us both as individuals and as a church.  Please take advantage of this quiet time and spend some time in prayer prior to worship.

The ladies Book Study will meet on Saturday morning at 9:00 in the Ruth Room across from the office.  Please read Chapters 5&6 in preparation.  Here’s a funny quick clip to enjoy as we think about sharing our Easter joy!  Awkward Easter Invite

A Celebration!  Thank you to the members of our former Diaconate who have faithfully supported our Compassion Child for many years both in funds, prayer and letters.  We received a letter from Compassion that Roberth has completed all of the activities available to him at the student center and is no longer in the sponsorship program.  Thank you for your faithful support of Roberth for all these years.  If you are interested in sending him a final gift or card/letter, please give me a call and I can let you know how to do that.

If anyone is still interested in ordering a plant for Easter, give a call to the office.  It’s not too late!

A reminder…you should have received a special Easter offering envelope in the mail last week.  As mentioned on Sunday that can be used to support our church needs here or to support Michelle as she heads to China.  Please make note on the memo line – “church” or “Michelle”  Envelopes are also available on the Resource Tables.  Thanks you for your support.

A Season of Prayer – a time devoted to prayer for our church, beginning the day after Easter and continuing until Pentecost Sunday, May 15th.  You are encouraged to spend time privately each day in prayer for our church.  Pastor Kevin will mention this on Sunday as well.

“Thank you for the wonderful surprise birthday and 25 years of ministry party.  And it was a surprise!  Great job at keeping secrets!  I was moved greatly by your expressions of love.  God bless you all.  Pastor Kevin

Holy Week 2016

Hello there!  Here’s a description of the opportunities to recognize Holy Week here at United Church of Norwood!

Palm Sunday Worship- 10am:  Join us for a special time as we recognize Christ’s Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem.  We’ll have a guest presentation about missionary work in Asia, a very special Kids Connection Time for nursery, elementary & middle school.  That will conclude with a family rally time as parents pick their kids up.  As always, worship will be followed by coffee time in Veno Hall.

Wednesday Bible Study 6:30pm:  Come join us as we reflect on the gift of the redemption found in Christ at our weekly Bible Study in led by our Pastor in Veno Hall following the Open Door Meal.

Maundy Thursday Reflection Time 6:30pm:  OUr Sanctuary will be open for a time of quiet reflection and communion will be available from 6:30-8pm.  Stop in for a few minutes, or the whole time!  Here’s what a member of our congregation said after attending our Ash Wednesday reflection time, “Last night I sat for an hour in a quiet sanctuary and at one point thought about sacred moments. I was reminded that doing laundry for a sick friend is sacred space. Holy ground is not some magical space, it is wherever we live as the body of Christ. May we do small things with great love for such is the kingdom of God”

Good Friday Worship 7pm:  Join us as we come together to recognize the sacrifice Jesus made to demonstrate to us the depth of the Lord’s unconditional love for us.  This will be a time of music, scripture reading, and reflection.

Easter Sunday Celebration Worship 10am:  Join us as we come together to celebrate the hope that’s found in the resurrection.  The sanctuary will be adorned with beautiful flowers, there will be wonderful musical offerings, we’ll have a special program provided for our kids, and an encouraging message from our Pastor.

St. Patrick’s Day Weekly Connection

Hope you are wearing your green today! here’s a little tidbit to explore as we consider the significance of St. Patrick. Finding Meaning in St. Patrick’s Day

Here are the things you need to be aware of for the next several  BUSY days and weeks:

Tomorrow evening at 7:30 is the final Singspiration of the season.  In addition to singing great hymns of our faith, there are several excellent special musical numbers including our own United Quartet.  End your week on an uplifting note and join us!  Coffee follows in the Fellowship Hall.  With Singspiration winding down…that means the Spring/Summer Meetinghouse Concerts will be starting up!  Great Southern Gospel concerts start up on April 24th with “Freedom Quartet.”  More info on that in the coming weeks.

Please meet in the Fellowship Hall – although that location may change once we get here!  We will be working on a special Easter project for some of our homebound folks.  Ladies – check your email for details from Cindy Rudolph!  All ladies are welcome.

Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in Veno Hall is the Mid-Winter Extravaganza that you have been hearing about!   With all the nice weather we have been having, I think we were fooled into thinking that winter was done with us…that may not be the case according to Sunday evening’s forecast.  But for now, come join your church family and friends for a great afternoon celebrating the warmer days ahead.  Our Hospitality Team has all kinds of fun planned 🙂 Your part is to come!  If you want to bring along a treat to share, that would be delightful!

Prayer is vital to our individual and corporate growth.  On Sunday mornings you will have an opportunity to pray for our church!  Yuniya Simms will be here in the church parlor from about 8:30 to 9:30 each Sunday morning to pray.  You are welcome to come and join her and be a part of this specific prayer time. Come as you can and leave when you need to.

Sunday morning at 10:00 we worship together as we recognize Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week.  Plan to be here!  Wonderful music, a great message, special music from our choir are all part of our service.  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall.

Young Life is on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor of our church.  Meg is our go-to person for any questions you may have.

Look for the insert in your bulletin on Sunday morning if you are interested in purchasing a plant for Easter.  Orders need to be in by March 23rd.  As usual you are welcome to take your plant with your following worship on Easter Sunday.

An Easter letter was mailed out this morning – please read it through!  You will find all the details on Holy Week services as well as 2 opportunities to support the ministry.  Contact the office if you aren’t on our mailing list but are interested in receiving our occasional letters to the congregation.

Be sure and pick up Our Daily Bread Devotional from the Resource Tables.  The large print edition begins in April.  I have those in the office if anyone would like one now.

We have several things happening in the coming weeks that you will want to keep in mind.

Friday, March 18th at 7:30 is the final Singspiration of the year.  I just receive the information with the special music for the evening and our very own United Quartet will be singing!

Saturday, March 19th is a busy day here!  Our WISH group will be gathering at 9:00am in the Fellowship Hall to work on a special Easter project for some of our homebound members.  Cindy has been sending out the all the details.  Please speak with her if you have any questions.

Also on the 19th at 1:00pm is our Mid-Winter Extravaganza – celebrating the end of winter and the beginning of the warmer days ahead!  Please look for the bulletin insert on Sunday for all the details.

March 20th ( a week from Sunday!) is Palm Sunday. Please note that we will not be having a Maundy Thursday service this year but we will be having a Good Friday service at 7:00pmon March 25th.  And of course, Easter Sunday is March 27th.

I neglected to mention that Easter plants are once again available for purchase for $12.00.  All orders must be received by March 23rd.  Look for an insert in your bulletin on Sunday or pick up an order form from a Resource Table.  The plants will adorn our sanctuary on Easter Sunday.  You are welcome to take your plant with you following the service that day.

I am not sure if anyone has responded but Pastor was looking for a willing volunteer to embellish the wooden cross that is used during Holy Season. Seasonably appropriate decorations might include flowers, butterflies, ribbons, etc.  If you have some ideas and that is something you would be interested in, please speak to Pastor Kevin.

Also, the following people are serving on Sunday morning:
Greeter- Bob Russell
Ushers – Deb Bayha, Barbara Sweeny

I think that is all I have for you today – looking forward to seeing you on Sunday morning.  Don’t forget to change your clock!

Welcome to March! Weekly Connection

Hope you are  having a good day!  Here are the things to have in mind over the next few days and weeks:

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  Communion will be offered during the service.  Our Helping Hands offering is also received on Communion Sundays.  Look for the envelope in your bulletin if this is something that you typically participate in.  Those funds are used at Pastor’s discretion to help those in our church family and community with pressing financial needs.  Nursery care is available and Meg has Kids Connection and our Nursery staffed with caring volunteers. I have heard many encouraging words about  last Sunday’s service.  If you weren’t here you missed uplifting music, a great message, coffee & conversation with old and new friends and a busy kid’s program!  Please be here to start your week with your church family!

Young Life starts up again on Monday evening.  All high-schoolers welcome at 7:27pm on the top floor.  See Meg if you have any questions.

Marion Rich requests are due in the church office on Monday please!

This week we received the Operation Christmas Child reporton December’s Shoe box project.  Lots of inspiring stories!  Some of you may have also received it at home.  Over 8 million shoeboxes were collected in 2015 in the United States.  Those simple boxes were then delivered to children in 109 countries.  Look for this report on the Resource Table in the Welcome Center.  There is a great story of a 9 year old girl ( yes, 9 years old!) who rallied her friends and issued a challenge to schools, churches etc. to pack 5,000 boxes.  She exceeded her goal by 161 boxes.  WOW!

Take a look at the church with 25 members who through various ways packed over 2000 boxes in 2015.  One small shoebox makes a huge difference!  I hope you will take the time to glance through.  I am sure you can also access this report/magazine through Samaritans purse.org.  Thank you for being a part of this outreach ministry each year.

Did you know that shoeboxes can be done year round?  You don’t need to wait till the busiest time of year to pack your box!  Maybe you could plan on packing a few boxes?  Maybe one each season?  These little things make a big difference!

Once again as is our tradition, you will have the opportunity to purchase Easter plants.  The cost is $12.00.  Although the insert will not be in your Sunday bulletin until March 13th, I will leave some of the order forms on the Resource Tables for those of you who like to plan ahead.  You can place your order form in the offering plate or drop it off at the office.

Keep in mind…

Our Hospitality Team is planning a Mid-Winter Extravaganza for Saturday, March 19th at 1:00 here in our Fellowship Hall.  I am not sure of all the details but I do know that an afternoon of music, games and food is planned.  I heard the word skits too…sounds like fun!  If someone is creative and would like to help out with some decorations…that would be helpful.  Sharon & Rachel have something in mind and could use an extra pair of hands to help out.  Just a time to get together and brighten up the days while we await warm weather and spring!  If you would like to bring along a dessert to share, that would be great!  Please see Sharon or Rachel with any questions.

Sunday – March 13th – Mom’s Tea at 1:00pm in the Welcome Center
Monday – March 14th – Council Meeting at 7:00pm
Friday – March 18th – Singspiration at 7:30pm
