April 28 Weekly Connection

Hope you are having a good week!  Here are the things to keep in mind over the next days and weeks:

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  Communion will be offered at the service. Our Helping Hands offering is also received on Communion Sundays. Those funds are used at Pastor Kevin’s discretion to help those in our church family and the local community with financial needs.  As always great music and time spent in prayer are important parts of our time together.  Our Kids Connection is staffed with dedicated volunteers to teach and care for the little ones. Coffee time in Veno Hall follows worship.

Please remember that prior to Sunday morning worship there is a time of prayer in the church parlor.  Sunday mornings can be very busy times so you are welcome to come and go as you need to. You are encouraged to come a bit early for church, spend some time praying and then move into the sanctuary for worship.  What a great way to begin your Sunday morning!  Thank you to Yuniya Simms for facilitating this  time.

Sunday May 8th is Mother’s Day!  During coffee time that day, our WISH group will once again be sponsoring a Bake Sale.  Lots of yummy treats ready for eating or sharing with someone special.  Funds raised will be going for a specific church project.

If you are interested in taking the step of church membership, please speak to Pastor Kevin.  New members will be welcomed on May 15th, Pentecost Sunday.

You should have noticed in the bulletin last week a reminder to continue your commitment to prayer for our church, for Michelle as she prepares to go to China and for our Compassion Child, Kevin.  I spoke with Compassion this morning and there is no update on Kevin.  The area he lives in was hit particularly hard during the earthquake and they are having trouble even getting into the area.  They have assured me that when they have some sort of concrete information they will call us.  This little guy lives with his grandmother, his birthday is today (8 years old) and his world has certainly been shattered in the past few weeks.  Remember him.

To stay up-to-date on Michelle, we will be keeping any new emails or information from Michelle on the table in the narthex.  Take a look on your way into worship.

Stephanie & Sharon are both serving this weekend at the Walk to Emmaus.  Please pray for them both and for the people they will be ministering to.

A huge word of thanks to everyone who has so faithfully supported our Blessing Bag ministry. To date we have distributed 180 backpacks full of necessities and words of encouragement.  Thank you!  You made a difference for a struggling woman.

Serving this Sunday:
Ushers:  Rich Carter, Steve Carter, Georgia Shaw
Greeter:  ?
Kids:  Meg, Jenna, Sydney, Debbie S., Amy , Silpa
Coffee time:  We currently have NO ONE signed up to help out with any part of coffee time.

I think that is all for now.  Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Speaking of Sunday worship…did you hear Pastor Kevin mention last week that our Praise Team is looking for your favorite “old hymns” to include in ourservice? If you have one in mind, please speak to Rachel (I think!) and let her know and watch to see it included in the service in the coming weeks.

Council members are reminded of the meeting on Monday evening at 7:00 in the Ruth Room.

Did you place your prayer reminders someplace where you see them?  Don’t forget!  We have 3 specific areas we are praying for: pray for our church and the ministries that help us to share Christ; pray for Michelle and her trip to China; pray for Kevin, our Compassion child who has not been located following the earthquakes in Ecuador.  Saw this and thought I’d share…”We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.”  Oswald Chambers

Faith Seeds lessons are available in the church office – ladies, please pick them up there.  Also any women that would like to be involved in this ministry, please speak to me.

Sunday evening is the first Meetinghouse concert of the season at Victory Church in Sharon.  The Freedom Quartet will be singing.  The evening begins at 6:oo and tickets are available at the door. A wonderful evening of great music!

Worship team update:

We are blessed to have many different facets of our worship services that come together to provide a meaningful experience.  We are always hoping to find ways to keep our time connecting with the Lord special.  This week we want to focus on the need for support with our audio/visual component of worship. It would be very helpful to have more people able to attend to our computer projection on Sunday mornings – no experience needed, training is available.  Contact Meg Nelson, faithfulmeg@yahoo.com if you are interested in helping out.

Blessing Bags:
Our Blessing Bag ministry continues to grow!  Thank you for your support as we reach out to women in difficult places.  These are the needed items:
Regular size water bottles (16 ounces)
Ramen Noodles
Hand Sanitizer
Small spiral bound notebooks
Used or new backpacks – desperately needed

You should have received a post card in the mail this week for our “Season of Prayer.”  Place that card in a prominent place as a reminder to pray regularly for our church.  Additional cards are available on the Resource Tables if you would like more.

We were thrilled to find a package in today’s mail from Michelle Hughes thanking us for our financial and prayer support.  She also included beautiful prayer cards for us to remember her.  Pick yours up on the Resource Tables and remember to also keep that in a prominent place where you will  see it!    Her thank you is also posted on the board near the Welcome Center.

April 7 Weekly Connection

Hope you are having a good week!  That little April snow caught us off guard a bit – it does keep us on our toes doesn’t it?

Saturday morning at 9:00 is the next get-together of the women’s book study.  Meet in the Ruth Room across from the office – it is an easy space to warm up 🙂  We’ll be looking at Chapters 6 & 7.  Please read those chapters in preparation if you can.  Bring your coffee with you or we have a Keurig available as well.

Young Life will be hosting its 3rd annual talent night this Saturday at 7pm here in Veno Hall. It will feature Capernaum (young life for teens with special needs), Wyld Life (middle schoolers), and our Young Life high school-ers.  Wouldn’t it be such an encouragement for these families to see a great presence from members of the host site?  Tickets are $5 and go to benefit scholarships for Capernaum Camp.

A season of prayer…a time you set aside time to specifically pray for our church needs.  One opportunity for you to do this is Sunday mornings prior to worship.  Meet in the church parlor for a time of prayer.  People arrive at different times on Sunday mornings.  You are welcome to  come and go as you need to.  Special thanks to Yuniya for taking the lead in this.

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  A wonderful way to begin your week!  Great music, an encouraging message from Pastor Kevin, time to share your prayer needs and connecting with your friends here over hot coffee.  Kids Connection and Nursery are also up and running.  A special word of THANKS to those who volunteer in our kids programs – as our need has increased, more volunteers have stepped in to help out.  Thank you!

Don’t forget that Young Life meets here on Monday evenings at 7:27 for all high school age kids.

You may recall that a few weeks back I mentioned that Roberth, our Compassion child that our former Diaconate had faithfully supported for many years had completed the program.  I spoke with Compassion yesterday and they wanted to extend their deep appreciation for that support and also to let us know that Roberth is planning to continue his education to become an engineer.  Isn’t that wonderful!?  We also received the information on the new child we will be supporting.  His name is “Kevin” (how appropriate:)  He is 8 years old and is from Ecuador.  Meg supports a child from Ecuador and there may be others as well.  I believe the church Council may take up the financial support for Kevin.  I would encourage you to take a look at the Compassion website as well as the World Vision site.  These are both solid ministries that do great work to both physically help deserving children and families as well as partner with local churches to guide them to faith in Christ.  There are many children in need of sponsorship.  Some have been waiting for over a year. – for $38.00 a month you really can make a lasting difference.  Please check out those sites.

Thank you for your generous response to our Easter offering.  In Pastor Kevin’s letter he mentioned two needs where would be directing those funds.  One was for Michelle Hughes’ trip to North Asia through TEAM.  We received $1720.00 towards that cause.  A check was mailed to TEAM today.  Michelle will also direct someone here in the states to keep us updated on her trip.  The second area was for our church needs.  We received $2540.00 designated to church financial obligations.  THANK YOU!

From time to time, people have asked to be more aware of what is happening financially here at UCN.  In an effort to be transparent and keep you informed, here are some figures for your consideration:
For the first quarter of 2016:
Regular offerings received        $33,644.74  ( this includes pledged amounts and loose plate)
Special Gifts received               $3,168.97   (does not include Easter offering)
Expenses:                                 $33,453.11

Difference:                              +$3,360.60

Thank you for your commitment to UCN.  We serve a faithful God and our needs are always met by His guiding hand and watch care  over us.  Obviously we have ongoing financial commitments (mortgage, utilities, payroll etc.)  to be aware of.  At this time our fuel oil and plowing bills are paid in full.

Please speak with Elsa or Georgia or call the office with any questions you may have.

Do you have school age nieces, nephews, or grand kids?  Do you know someone in the area who does?  Invite them to join you on one of our April break adventures.  Kids Connection families- be sure to invite friends and classmates to join  you at these great outings!
