Memorial Day Weekend Connection

What a beautiful day!  As Memorial Day is just around the corner, I hope you will take time in some small way to recognize the sacrifices that many have made for our freedom here.  June is on our doorstep as well and here are some things to keep in mind:

Sunday begins with…PRAYER.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity to spend time praying for our church!  The church parlor is available for just that purpose beginning at about 8:45 and running till 9:30.  You are welcome to come and go as you need to.  Thank you to Yuniya Simms for facilitating this time. Worship in the sanctuary begins at 10:00.  Enthusiastic singing, special music from our choir, Rachel will be singing at the offertory, prayers and praise time and a great message from Pastor Kevin are all part of our time together. I realize this is a holiday weekend and that means traveling for many but if you are in the area, please be here 🙂

Dedicated volunteers are in place to work with younger and older kids in Kids Connection and Nursery.  Coffee time follows worship in Veno Hall.  We will need some help with clean-up so once you are finished with your coffee, please lend a hand in the kitchen to get things put away.

Look for an insert in your Sunday bulletin with the details for the Church Family Picnic on June 12th.  The sign-up sheet is in Veno Hall. June 12th is also Kids Sunday.  Look for lots of involvement from our kids that day!

Marion Rich requests are due in the church office on June 9th.

The mail just arrived and there were 2 things of interest.  The first is a letter we received from the Compassion Child that the church sponsored for many years.  Roberth has now finished high  school and is looking forward to studying to become an engineer.  I will post his letter on the board near Veno Hall.  Take some time to read it.  Also, many of you may know that Franklin Graham is traveling around the country and speaking in every state capital.  He will be in Boston at the Common on Tuesday, August 30th.  I think that there may be folks her who would like to be a part of that.  As I receive more information, I will let you know.

Pick up Michelle’s latest update on the table in the narthex.

NEW Daily Bread for June – August available on Resource Tables.

Hope you have been enjoying this week – what a beautiful stretch of weather! Here are some things to keep in mind over the next several days:

Many thanks to everyone who committed to our season of prayer leading up to Pentecost last Sunday. God hears and answers those prayers and we look forward to all that God has in store for our future!

Sunday brings us another full day! A time specifically designated for prayer happens in the church parlor prior to worship. You are encouraged to come by anytime between 8:45 – 9:30 and spend time with others praying for our church and the services of the day. Feel free to come and go as you need to. Worship begins at 10:00 in the sanctuary. I hope that you always pray for Pastor Kevin, but Pastor would really appreciate your prayers this Sunday. He is preparing to speak on Satan and evil. Please pray for the presence of the Holy Spirit during the service.

As always our Kids Connection is staffed with caring volunteers to work with the young ones. Coffee follows in the fellowship hall.

Following worship there will be a brief meeting of the Building Stewards. Please take your coffee and meet in the Welcome Center.

Pre-Pentecost Weekly Connection

Hello everyone, It appears that Spring has found us!  Hope you find some time to get out and enjoy the sun. Here are some things to be aware of for the next days:

We received a second update from Michelle this week.  Everything is in order and she is leaving Monday for China.  Please be in prayer for her as she takes this long flight – arriving on Wednesday.  Be sure and pick up a copy of her update on the table in the narthex.

Sunday is Pentecost Sunday!   Plan now on being here!  We have been talking about this for several weeks now.  Everyone is welcome to join others in the church parlor and spend some time prayer prior to the worship service which begins at 10:00.   Worship will be an encouraging and uplifting time – great music, prayers, message from Pastor Kevin and our United Quartet will be singing.  Kids Connection is also happening and there will be a special family rally  in honor of Pentecost following worship in the Kids classroom.  It’s going to be a great day – be here!

A few weeks ago Meg gave the suggestion of a “homework” assignment, encouraging everyone in this season of praying for the church to pray for someone they might want to invite to join them at church on Pentecost Sunday.  It’s coming up, so please keep your family, friends, and neighbors in your prayers as you pray for our church, and consider taking the step of inviting them to join you!

Coffee time follows worship – I noticed that we do not have anyone signed up for set-up.  If someone can come a bit early on Sunday morning and take care of that – it would be appreciated.  We have volunteers for treats and clean-up.

Council members are reminded of Monday’s meeting at 7:00 in the Ruth Room across from the office.

Young Life also meets Monday evening, 7:27 on the top floor for all high schoolers.

WISH Gathering for women of all ages is Saturday morning, May 21st at 9:00.  We have a special project we will be working on and also hear from Deb Bayha and Sam Riley about the skincare products they are involved with.  We will also be hearing  some of our ladies “stories.”  It will be a wonderful morning that you don’t want to miss!  Coffee and treat of course 🙂

Ice Cream Social:  Kids Connection will be hosting a “Sundae Sunday” Ice cream social Sunday May 22 at 3pm at the church.  It will be a fun time of ice cream, games, and crafts!

Many thanks to everyone who supported the WISH Bake Sale last Sunday!  There was a huge variety of delicious baked goods and we are happy to support our church with the proceeds received.  Thank you!

Serving on Sunday:
Greeters:  Dick & Joan Ripley
Ushers:  Russ & Donna Wood
Kids:  Barbara, Georgia, Janna, Meg and Shannon

That is all for now – please contact the office if you have any questions or concerns we can help you with.

National Day of Prayer Connection

In the United States, today is the 65th annual National Day of Prayer, May 5, 2016.

“An unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord’s healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne.”
The theme for 2016 is Wake Up America, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of our Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name.  It seems appropriate that the chosen Scripture for this year is Isaiah 58:1, “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.”

Thanks for taking the time to read through your weekly connection and making note of what pertains to you.

Saturday morning at 9:00 is the next meeting of the Women’s Book Study.  We will be meeting in the Ruth Room across from the office.  Feel free to bring your coffee or breakfast with you!  Please read Chapter #9 in preparation.

Sunday morning is a busy day!   The church parlor is open for prayer prior to worship.  As we continue in a season of prayer, this is an opportunity for you to specifically pray for our church.  You are welcome to come and go as you need to.  Please see Yuniya Simms with any questions.

Sunday worship follows at 10:00.  Wonderful singing, great music from our choir, time for praises and prayers, uplifting message from Pastor Kevin, a special offertory and a fun Kid’s Connection are packed into the morning!  A little thought gift will be given to all the women.  Hope to see you there!

A special Mother’s Day Bake Sale will be happening in Veno Hall during coffee time. Coffee and beverages will be available as usual.  For food snacks on this special day, WISH is supplying delicious homemade baked goods which are available for purchase.  All proceeds will benefit our church.  Be sure and stop by the Bake Sale!

Don’t forget  that Sunday is Mother’s Day – remember your Mom or some other special lady who has impacted your life.

Last call – if you are interested in church membership, please speak to Pastor Kevin today.

Young Life meets on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor here at church.

I want to give you some information regarding a 5K “Race for Hope” (runners and walkers!)on Saturday, May 21st.  Emmanuel Baptist Church in Norfolk is sponsoring this event.  All proceeds support Amirah House which provides support for those trying to break free from exploitation.  There are info cards on the Resource Tables.  Also check out http://ebcnorfolk.org/5k  for info and registration.
