October is Coming with Lots of News!

Hi everyone, Well September flew right on by!  Hope you have a good week.

We received a few thank you notes this week that I want to mention.  Teen Challenge was with us a few weeks back and we received a note thanking us for the offering of $475.  They also sent along their latest newsletter that I have posted at the Nahatan Street board entrance.  Some great things happening there to look at!  One of the gals that was with us is also profiled.  I am not sure if anyone decided to sponsor one of the women – I know we have several already being sponsored.  The church will also be sponsoring one woman.

You may recall that we collected a special offering for our Compassion Child, Kevin.  Those funds were going to help him and his family rebuild following the earthquake that devastated his home.  Thanks to your generosity and God working through you, we sent a family gift of $890.00.  We actually collected more than that but there are restrictions on how much can be sent at one time. I have posted that word of thanks from Compassion at the entrance to the Welcome Center .

Take a look at the kitchen and Veno Hall – the painting is progressing along nicely.  We expect it to be completed soon!

We will be starting an “Under 40” (will be looking for a better name at some point) Discussion Group on the third Sunday of the month starting October 16.  We’ll be going through a video series together “All the Places to Go” about the interesting adventures people have experienced when following God’s call on their heart.  It will take place 11:15-12pm in the first floor conference room.  We are working on being able to provide child care as well.  Get in touch with Meg Nelson if you have any questions.
The third annual Young Life 5K Walkathon will be taking place October 29 at Adams Farm in Walpole .  This is the primary fundraiser for a crucial ministry reaching out to high school students, middle school students, and students with special needs! The weekly high school outreach club meets on our top floor on Mondays in the fall and spring.  We’re looking forward to our middle schoolers joining in some of their Wyld Life events this year as well! Would you consider joining the walk? Or perhaps you can sponsor someone who is walking!  If you or someone you know runs a business that would be interested in becoming an event sponsor, that’s another great way to help! Check in with Meg Nelson for info! Here’s the link to register to walk https://giving.younglife.org/MA34WALK16

To directly sponsor Meg to walk, you can do so here, https://giving.younglife.org/Views/evt/dsp_ParticipantPage.cfm?idEvent=664&idUser=84310 or giving her a donation in person! Most of all, please keep this great ministry in your prayers!

We’re looking forward to starting up two “Moms & Tots” groups for moms with little ones approximately 9-18 months (with plenty of flexibility in age). We’ll have a group that meets the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11am, and another meeting the 4th Thursday of the month at 11am in the church nursery for both moms and tots to have some great social time together!

Hope to see you at worship on Sunday morning at 10:00!  We have an uplifting service to prepare you for the week ahead – wonderful music from our choir, great singing, prayers and praises shared and Pastor Kevin’s continuing series from The Story.  Read along in Chapter 7 as Pastor will be speaking about the fall of Jericho .  Meg has caring volunteers for our kids programs.  Communion will be offered.  Look for the Helping Hands envelope in your bulletin if you typically participate in this special offering that assists those with financial concerns.  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall.

Prior to worship, the church parlor is available for a time devoted to prayer for our church.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to make prayer a priority in your day!  Speak to Yuniya with any questions you have.

Young Life (as mentioned above) begins again on Monday evening at 7:27 on the third floor.  A great ministry to all high schoolers – see Meg with any questions please.

Ladies!  Be sure and stop by the table in the Welcome Center and sign up for the NEW Women’s study which begins next Saturday, October 8th at 9:30 in the Ruth Room across from the office.  The books have been ordered and I suspect they will be delivered today.  The cost is $10.00 for each book.

Back to Church Updates & More!

Hi everyone,  What a beautiful week!  Here are the things to have in mind as you plan your time over the next days.

Saturday afternoon at 1:00 is our first WISH gathering of the season.  All ladies are invited to an afternoon tea at the Thomas’ newly renovated and expanded kitchen.  Shannon & Rachel are hosting the afternoon and would love to see you!

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY IS HERE and we are looking forward to a great day!

As we approach the last few days leading up to National Back to Church Sunday, let’s remember it’s not too late to invite someone to join us!  It is going to be a great day as we hear from the ladies of Teen Challenge Rhode Island, and enjoy a potluck meal together.  God calls each and every believer to share the good news of Christ. It is also the only way to ensure the great legacy of God’s love working in and through United Church of Norwood can continue for generations to come.  Here are a few more videos of inspiration and humor to encourage us as we reach out to our neighbors with the love of Christ.

We will plan to start lunch at about 11:30.  Thanks to everyone who signed-up to bring food to share at the pot-luck.  The gals from Teen Challenge will be having lunch with us.  That will be an additional 18 women, so please keep that in mind as you prepare your foods!

Just a reminder…the Teen Challenge ladies will have tables set-up in the Welcome Center to display the items that they sell to raise funds for the ministry.  In addition to the jewelry that they make, they also have their own coffee available this year.  There will be an offering plate available as we will be collecting a love offering for the Teen Challenge women.

Sunday evening is the final Meetinghouse Concert of this season.  The New Dove Brothers will begin the evening at 6:00 at Victory Church in Sharon.  Tickets are available at the door. If you have never attended, I encourage you to come on Sunday evening.  You will hear wonderful, uplifting, happy music!   As I have said before it is a great way to end the weekend and start the week ahead!

Monday evening at 7:00 is the next Church Council meeting.  Council members, please check your email for information from Barbara Sweeny.

We will continue collecting supplies for the triplets through the end of September.  Please leave your donations at the display in the Welcome Center.  Wipes, diapers and onesies are some items that are frequently used.  Thank you for welcoming these little ones!

Did you pick up the latest issue of the devotional,  Our Daily Bread?  Did you notice that the scripture is now printed with the daily thought?  Copies available on the Resource Tables.

We are so excited that Yuniya has taped her first message for Norwood Cable.  I will let you know when it will be aired – sometime next week.  And if you are not a Norwood resident, you can still watch Yuniya on NPATV.org.  Please keep this new ministry in your prayers and for Yuniya as she shares God’s word.

The NEW Bible Study on “Abraham” will begin on Monday, October 10th at 7:00 at the parsonage.  More details to follow or speak to Pastor Kevin with any questions you have.

There will also be a new Women’s Study starting up soon!  Look for info in that in the coming weeks!

CELEBRATION!  Painting begins next week in Veno Hall and the kitchen.  Exciting to see some of these well-loved spaces getting spruced up!

Serving on Sunday:
Greeter:  Sandy Habib
Ushers:  Dottie Cotter, Barbara Sweeny
Kids:  Meg, Shannon, Silpa, Sandy, Sydney and Angela

I think that’s all I have for you  – tomorrow is another day so if I have missed anything, I will send along then 🙂

Enjoy the weekend! We can’t wait to see you Sunday at 10am!

September Start-Up Connection

Hello everyone,  As September gets into full swing, there is a lot to be aware of.  Please note those things that pertain to you.

NORWOOD DAY is finally here!  This Saturday, September 10th, our lawn will be abuzz with activity, people and fun!  We have plenty of places for you to be involved so feel free to come to the side lawn anytime during the day.  If you are an early riser, set-up is at 8:30!  Later in the day better for you?  Clean-up starts at 2:00…and all the times in between , we will have spaces for you to “man our booth.”  The weather is looking great, so plan to come by and lend some support!

Sunday is September 11th.  It is hard to believe that it has been 15 years since the tragedies of that day.  As seems appropriate, we begin the day with time and space for prayer in our church parlor beginning at about 8:45 and finishing up about 9:30.  Come and go as you need to.  Worship follows at 10:00 in the sanctuary.  I hope you have been following along in “The Story” for Pastor’s message.  Please read Chapter 6 for this Sunday.  We are so glad that our choir will be back in place on Sunday!  We’ve missed them!  Kids Connection is in place too and Meg has new plans for the kids for the fall!  Wonderful music, greeting new and old friends, prayers and praises all make up our worship together.  See you there!

We are also back to our regular coffee time following worship which means…go to the sign-up outside of the kitchen and see where you can help out 🙂  We have no one signed up for this week. We need someone to help with set up (I will start this tomorrow) and others to provide snacks and still others to clean up.  We all enjoy this time, so let’s work together and help out with this.

There will be a brief meeting of the Church Council and the Building Stewards in the Welcome Center this Sundayfollowing worship to discuss the upcoming painting of Veno Hall and the kitchen.

Our School Year Kids Connection programming will start up this Sunday, where nursery for little ones up to age 3 can go to nursery, and kids PreK-Grade 4 will be dismissed for kids time during the time of greeting.  Grades 4-8 will be dismissed during the middle hymn (except communion Sundays)  It’s going to be a great year of growing closer to our friends and to God’s great love.  Stay tuned for other ways we’ll be reaching out to support our kids and families in the school year ahead!

Back to Church Sunday, September 18th, is fast approaching! There is still time to invite friends and family.  It will be a  great Sunday!  The ladies from Teen Challenge will be sharing inspirational stories of transformation.  And of course, the potluck dinner that follows.  Are you praying about people you’d like to invite?   And don’t forget the invitations we’ve printed up, and please bring any names of folks you’re inviting (or might invite) to church on Sunday the 11th so that all can be praying. Are you working up the nerve to ask?  Check out this video link.   Back To Church “Reasons

Be sure and stop at the table in the Welcome Center and sign-up for the Back to Church Pot Luck on Sunday, September 18th!  We are looking forward to a great Sunday – bring a friend, hear great stories from the Young Life gals and stay for lunch.

All ladies are invited to the first WISH Gathering of the year on Saturday , September 17th at 1:00 at Shannon’s home.  We will be enjoying an “afternoon tea” and hearing Yuniya’s story!  We would love to see new faces!  Please speak to Cindy Rudolph for details or questions.

Marion Rich requests must be in the church office by Tuesday morning.

Please keep Yuniya in your prayers as she begins ministry on local cable.  Yuniya will be taping her first message on Monday morning.  I have asked her to let me know when the show will be aired.  She will be sharing a message monthly.  Wonderful news!

Karen Murray is grateful for the prayers said for her grandson.  Testing determined that he has viral mononucleosis and with rest and care, he will be fine.

Correction:  Please note that on the September calendar I listed Kaitie Frank’s birthday as Kaitie Thomas.  Please note that her correct last name is Frank.
