Ash Wednesday Reflection

For those of you who aren’t able to attend the Ash Wednesday Reflection Time, here’s the music, scripture, and prayers that we used if you want to have a reflection time of your own using this material over the next few days!

Genesis 3:19 You will have to work hard and sweat a lot  to produce the food you eat. You were made out of the ground. You will return to it when you die. You are dust,  and you will return to dust.”

“Come as You Are”

Come out of sadness from wherever you’ve been, Come broken-hearted let rescue begin Come find your mercy O sinner come kneel, Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can’t heal (So) Lay down your burdens lay down your shame All who are broken lift up your face O wanderer come home You’re not too far So lay down your hurt lay down your heart Come as you are There’s hope for the hopeless And all those who’ve strayed Come sit at the table come taste the grace There’s rest for the weary Rest that endures Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can’t cure Come as you are Fall in His arms Come as you are There’s joy for the morning O sinner be still Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can’t heal

Psalm 103:13-18 A father is tender and kind to his children. In the same way, the Lord is tender and kind to those who have respect for him. He knows what we are made of. He remembers that we are dust.  The life of human beings is like grass. People grow like the flowers in the field. When the wind blows on them, they are gone. No one can tell that they had ever been there. But the Lord’s love for those who have respect for him  lasts for ever and ever.Their children’s children will know that he always does what is right. He always loves those who keep his covenant. He always does what is right for those who remember to obey his commands.

Ash Wednesday Litany:   Most holy and merciful Father: We confess to you and to one another, and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven. We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit.

Have mercy on us, Lord.

We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives, Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people, Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves, Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work, Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,

We confess to you, Lord.

Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty, For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us, For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of concern for those who come after us,

Accept our repentance, Lord.

Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us; Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great. Accomplish in us the work of your salvation, That we may show forth your glory in the world. By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,

Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

“Lord I Need You”

Lord I come I confess Bowing here I find my rest And without You I fall apart You’re the one that guides my heart Lord I need You oh I need You Ev’ry hour I need You
My one defense my righteousness Oh God how I need You Where sin runs deep Your grace is more Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me Where You are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me So teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You Jesus You’re my hope and stay

Joel 2:12-13 The Lord announces to his people, “Return to me with all your heart There is still time. Do not eat any food Weep and mourn.” Don’t just tear your clothes to show how sad you are. Let your hearts be broken. Return to the Lord your God. He is gracious. He is tender and kind. He is slow to get angry. He is full of love. He won’t bring his judgment. He won’t destroy you.

Prayer for the Human Family: O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Mercy”

My past embraced My sin forgiven I’m blameless in Your sight My history rewritten ‘Cause You delight in showing mercyAnd mercy triumphs over judgment Oh love great love fear cannot be found in You And there will never be a day You’re uncertain of the ones You choose So I will awake and spend my days Loving the one who has raised me up From death to life from wrong to right You’re making all things beautiful

Matthew 5:1-19 One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn,  for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way. “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Prayer of St. Francis: Lord, make us instruments of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let us sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is discord, union;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

“Unashamed”

I have not much to offer You Not near what You deserve But still I come because Your cross Has placed in me my worth O Christ my King of sympathy Whose wounds secure my peace Your grace extends to call me friend Your mercy sets me free And (yeah) I know I’m weak I know I’m unworthy To call upon Your name But because of grace Because of Your mercy I stand here unashamed I can’t explain this kind of love I’m humbled and amazed That You’d come down from heaven’s heights And greet me face to face Here I am at Your feet In my brokenness complete At Your feet I’m complete

Romans 5:1-11 Christ our Lord has done for us.  Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.  And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.  Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

A Prayer of Self-Dedication: Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people;

through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

“Beautiful Things”

All this pain I wonder if I’ll ever find my way I wonder if my life could really change At all. All this earth Could all that is lost ever be found, Could a garden come up from this ground At all? You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of the dust You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of us All around Hope is springing up from this old ground Out of chaos life is being found In You You make me new You are making me new

Deuteronomy 6:4-6 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.

Numbers 6:24-26 ‘May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’

“Sanctuary”

Lord Prepare Me, to be a Sanctuary

Pure and Holy, Tried and True

With Thanksgiving, I’ll be a Living
