Pentecost Weekend Connection

Hello everyone,  hope you are having a good day and enjoying the sun!  We have had quite a bit of rain which is evidenced by mowing our lawns quite regularly this year!   But how good to be blessed with green grass, budding trees and colorful flowers.   Here are the things to have in mind as you plan your time:

Sunday worship is at 10:00 in the sanctuary.  Great music from both our choir and the congregation, a time for your prayers and praises, timely message from Pastor Kevin and Kids Connection for the little ones.  Following worship, we have 2 important events happening in Veno Hall.

The first is…

Renovation Celebration!  Recognizing the work done in Veno Hall through generous donations given in memory of Pastor Bill.  Painting, windows, shades, bulletin boards – lots of things to brighten the space!

The second is… also during coffee time,  an informational conversation regarding our affiliating with the Evangelical Free Church of America.  http://www.efca.org/ (this is the EFCA site) or http://www.efcneda.org/ (this is the EFCA site specifically for the New England district)  will help you connect!  Check out that site and come prepared to ask questions, share your thoughts and  add some helpful comments to our discussion!

In light of these 2 things happening, we expect to have more folks than usual in attendance.  To that end, it would be wonderful to have some special snacks for this special day!  There will be 2 tables set-up to accommodate the additional foods that we hope you will be bringing!

Young Life happens on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor. Young Life will also meet on June 12th before ending for the season.

Ladies, if you have unfinished projects you need to complete, mark your calendar for June 10th for a time to work on them. Veno Hall will be available for you to spread out and work on your UFO’s (UnFinished Objects 🙂 for the day.

Moms & Tots will meet on Saturday, June 10th at 9:30 at Meg’s home in Foxboro.  This will be great viewing for the Foxboro Founder’s Day parade.

Looking ahead:  June 11th will be the vote regarding affiliation with EFCA.  A quorum of 25 people is required for this meeting.

June 11th is also Family Sunday where we will be honoring our children and our high school graduates.  More details to follow!

What do Muslims actually believe?  What are Sunni and Shia and Sufi?  Is Islam a “religion of peace?”  What are the roots of Islamic fundamentalism?  And most importantly, what do we as Christians need to know about Islam in order to effectively present the gospel of Jesus Christ to a Muslim? These questions and more will be discussed and answered at a Summer and early Fall study that begins on Monday July 10th at 7 pm.  We will be meeting at the church in the council room (1st floor near the church office) for seven individual one hour sessions.  The sessions will be held approximately every other week through July, August and September.  There is a student workbook/guide that was written by Dr. Timothy Tennent.  Tennent is an evangelical who teaches at Asbury Theological Seminary.  See you there!  Pastor Kevin

Ever wonder about the daily life of our Compassion Child, Kevin?  Here is an opportunity that you might want to consider.  The  Compassion experience let’s people walk through a day in the life of a child in struggling parts of the world.  See Meg for details and check out this link.   https://cts.compassion.com/events/724

End of May Connection!

Hi everyone, Hope you are having a good day, despite the rain!  Here are some things to keep in mind over the coming days.  I try to keep you very aware of activities that are planned so you can participate in our church community.

For those ladies involved in the Women’s Book Study…the final get-together is this Saturday morning at 9:30 at Joanna Stranahan’s home for brunch.  Please check your email later today for info regarding this.  Sharon wants to get a handle on who is bringing what for food 🙂

Sunday worship is at 10:00 – I realize this is a holiday weekend but if you are home, please plan on being here!  We have a wonderful service planned to encourage you and build your faith.  Meg has Kid’s Connection in place with volunteers to help out with the younger ones.  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall. Hope to see you!

Renovation Celebration! Sunday June 4th after worship – a special coffee hour celebrating the Veno Hall renovations done over the last nine months in memory of Pastor Bill Christensen.  And a special thanks to those kind folks whose generosity made the renovations possible.

Moving Forward with the Evangelical Free Church
June 4th is a busy day!  As well as the special coffee hour to celebrate the renovation of Veno Hall there will also be a question / discussion time for the proposed affiliation with the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA).  Share your thoughts, ask a question… its all casual and open.  Don’t miss the opportunity to have your voice heard.

On June 11th there will be a full-fledged all church meeting after worship to vote on the motion to approve (or not approve) affiliating with the EFCA.

Family Sunday will be June 11.  We’ll be honoring kids moving into elementary school, high school, and our graduates!  We’d love to have our kids participate in creative ways, so contact Meg if your family will be here that Sunday so she can find a way for kids to plug in!  faithfulmeg@yahoo.com

Mid-May Connection

Greetings from the nice cool church office!  Here are some things to keep you in the loop of what is happening at UCN.

Our next WISH Gathering will be this Saturday at 9:00 in Veno Hall.  All ladies are invited – check your email for an update from Cindy.  Deb Baya will be talking about the exciting business adventure she has taken on!  Feel free to bring a snack to share – coffee will be ready 🙂

Our Under 40 Group will be meeting following worship this Sunday the 21st! Grab coffee and a snack and head down to the nursery for our second to last session of our study!

Sunday evening is the next Meetinghouse Concert – 6:00pm with Tribute Quartet.  A fun and energetic group that you don’t want to miss!  Tickets are available at the door.

We were blessed to have John Papirio, the Young Life Area Director as our guest preacher last week.  He mentioned the need for teens from Norwood to have access to scholarships to be able to come to summer camp, as the cost is $725, which includes transportation, meals, lodging, and an amazing array of activities at Saranac Village Young Life Camp.  Teens have what’s known as “the best week of your life” where all of the wild fun is wrapped up in the love of Christ as they build friendships with their peers, and stronger mentoring relationships with their area leaders.  Thousands of kids have started a relationship with Jesus while at Young Life camp.  If you wish to donate, checks can be made to the church with “Young Life Camp” in the memo.  Thanks for your prayer and support for this important mission to area teens!  For a glimpse of what a week of camp is like- check out this video! Young Life Saranac Village Promo For more into about the mission of Young Life, feel free to get in touch with Meg Nelson faithfulmeg@yahoo.com!

A reminder that all Kids Connection Volunteers need to have their responses for next year’s involvement by Sunday the 21st by handing in the form you received, calling, or emailing Meg. We’re so grateful for this important service to help our families grow in their faith!  If you’re curious about helping out, don’t hesitate to contact Meg!

This week’s Family Connection Notes are focused on helping families find ways to integrate faith into everyday life with practical tips and a great digital resource for parents! Even if you don’t have young ones at home anymore, check this out so you know how to support and encourage our families! United Kids Connection!

Your help is needed in a few areas:

Dot Cook schedules the ushers and greeters for each Sunday.  We need some additional volunteers to fill in some of the empty spaces.  This is an easy and yet important way you can get involved. Also, a good way to put names to faces!   Please give the office a call or speak to Janna for details.  Commitment time:  15-20 minutes on a Sunday morning

We could use one person to write to our Compassion Child via regular mail.  Commitment time:  about 10 minutes a month

COFFEE TIME SUPPORT:
Coffee time set-up:  Commitment time:  about a half hour on Sunday morning
Coffee time snacks:  Commitment time:  pick up something at the store when you are already doing your shopping 🙂 and drop off in the church kitchen

How can you help?  These are all very doable task that we really need help with.

Early April Connection

Good Morning,  Hope you are having a good week!  Here are some of the things to keep in mind over the next days.  As we enter Holy Week, there are additional services to be aware of.  Make special note of those.

Moms and Tots Saturday group will meet at Meg’s home in Foxboro at 11am, pack a lunch, and bring a snack to share! There’s a change in the April Calendar (Meg’s whoopsie!) the Thursday Moms & Tots will be the 27th, not the 20th as printed in the church calendar.

Young Life Capernaum is Young Life’s ministry to teens with disabilities, and it will be sponsoring its annual Talent Night here at the church this Saturday, April 8th. The goal is to raise money for the camp scholarship fund for teens with disabilities and their high school peer mentors/buddies to go to summer camp in Virginia. Tickets are $5.  This is a fun night where our typical Young Life High School teens, Capernaum teens, Wyld Life Middle Schoolers, and Young Life leaders all come together for a great celebration, it would be great to see our church well represented as a host location!

As we enter Holy Week, we have several opportunities for you to take part in.  The first is this Sunday which is Palm Sunday.  A wonderful service is being planned – be sure to be here!  Wonderful singing, special music from our choir, Meg & Rachel singing at the offertory, message from Pastor Kevin, handing out of palms, Kids Connection and coffee time.  There is also a little one being baptized on Sunday.  Sounds like a full morning!  Please note that Communion will not be offered this Sunday but will be served at the Maundy Thursday service which is on April 13th at 7:00 in the sanctuary.  This is a quieter meaningful time when we remember the last Passover which Christ had with the disciples.  I have heard many comments that this Maundy Thursday Service is one of the most meaningful times in our church.  Set aside this evening to be here. The sanctuary will be open from 6:00-7:30pm on Good Friday evening for a time of prayer.  This is another time to spend in a quiet place and reflect upon the events leading up to Easter.

Don’t forget…look for the Easter plant donation insert in your bulletin this Sunday!  Plants are $12.00 and can be given in memory or honor of a loved one.

Young Life meets on Monday evening at 7:27 on the top floor.  Meg has videos of Young Life activities on the  church FB page – check them out!

Kids Connection Palm Sunday & Easter:  We will be offering Kids Connection and Nursery care on our holiday/summer timeline, where kids and little ones may be dismissed to the kids space during the hymn before the sermon, and picked up there immediately following the end of the service.  We want families to celebrate these special days in the life of the church together, and will also have special story and craft time for our elementary aged kids each week!

Looking ahead a bit…

WISH Gathering – we are looking forward to the ladies helping out with doing some of the set-up for the Easter Sunrise Breakfast!   We may also lend a hand with the decorations for Easter Sunday in the sanctuary.

APRIL 16th  – EASTER SUNDAY begins at 6:30am with our Sunrise Service across from the church on the town Common.  This is a casual (and often cold time 🙂 when we recall the empty tomb and resurrection of Christ.  Come dressed warm and comfortably!  Following the Sunrise Service we will be heading to the Fellowship Hall here to enjoy a hot pancake breakfast!  This is a great time to invite your friends!  Meg prepared wonderful handouts that were in last Sunday’s bulletin.  Look for them this week as well…don’t keep them though, hand out to your family and friends!  Breakfast should finish up by about 8:15 leaving you plenty of time to get home and freshen up before Easter worship at 10:00.  Be sure and STOP by the table in the narthex and sign-up for where you might be able to help out with breakfast!

Check out the bulletin board in the Welcome Center for details on the Meetinghouse Concerts beginning here later this month.  First up is The Dixie Echoes on April 23rd at 6:00pm.

I hope you have noticed the sprucing up of many of the church areas!  A LOT of painting is being done.  Take a walk down towards the offices.  Things are looking much brighter!  As we get rooms and spaces freshened up, please do your part and keep those areas neat!  Sometimes an empty clean space seems like a good spot to leave things – please don’t do that!  If you are involved in a ministry and use an area, please be sure it is left clean and neatened up for the next person who goes in there!  Thanks for your help.  Also, another reminder to not leave any unopened foods anywhere in the church.  There are plastic containers in the kitchen that can be used as needed.

SERVING SUNDAY:
Greeter:  Dottie Cotter
Ushers: Rich Carter & Steve Carter
Kids:  Meg, Deb B., Carolyn, Melanie

That is all for now – looking forward to seeing you on Sunday morning!

Almost April Connection!

Hi everyone, So it doesn’t sound like “March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” is going to apply this year!  Stay safe and warm and wait for Red Sox Opening Day next week 🙂  In the meantime, please keep these things in mind.

Sunday worship begins at 10:00.  A wonderful time to put aside the cares of the week and find some rest and encouragement in worshipping together.  Uplifting music, encouraging message from Pastor Kevin and a time for prayers and praises.  Volunteers are in place for Kids Connection and Nursery Care.  Please note that Communion will not be offered this Sunday, April 2nd.  Communion will be served at our Maundy Thursday service on April 9th.

As Pastor mentioned last Sunday, we are having an Easter Sunrise service (April 16th) at 6:30am at the gazebo across from the church on the town common.  This will be followed by breakfast here at the church at 7:15am.  We hope you will want to be a part of this tremendous outreach to our friends and neighbors here in Norwood.  Please see the sign-up sheets on the table as you enter the sanctuary!  Join in and be a part of this time as we celebrate the empty tomb and our risen Lord.  We will also have our Easter Celebration worship service at the regular 10:00am time on Easter.

There will be 2 other opportunities during Holy Week.  A Maundy Thursday service at 7:00pm on April 13th and a time for Prayer and Reflection on Good Friday, April 14th from 6:00-7:00pm in the sanctuary.    It’s important to remember the days and events that lead up to Easter.  Please plan now to come to one or both of these services.

Young Life Capernaum is Young Life’s ministry to teens with disabilities, and it will be sponsoring its annual Talent Night here at the church Saturday April 8th.

“Facing Darkness”, the movie is being shown tonight in Braintree and Framingham locations at 7:00pm  Facing Darkness – In Select Cinemas March 30 & April 10

We are very excited to once again be hosting Meetinghouse Concerts!  Please be sure and check out the bulletin board in the Welcome Center for all the details.  The first concert will be on Sunday, April 23rd at 6:00pm featuring The Dixie Echoes.  Experience the joy of these evenings and be blessed by the wonderful message and harmonies of these groups!

I know you are all familiar with our Faith Seeds ministry.  A word of CONGRATULATIONS  to Deb Eagles who has just completed correcting and commenting on her 500th lesson for Faith Seeds!  W O W!    Deb has done an outstanding job offering support and encouragement for these incarcerated women.  Deb also volunteered to send the certificates of completion to the women who have successfully completed an entire study.  Great job!

There will be an insert in your bulletin on Sunday if you are interested in contributing a plant for Easter Sunday.  Cost is $12.00 – details on the insert.

We are looking for  gently used adult backpacks for our Blessing Bags ministry, they can be dropped off in the Ruth Room on the lower level of the church.  These bags are filled with supplies and given to women in transitional housing situations.  This is a wonderful opportunity to share the love of Christ in a practical way!

Ushers:  Dottie Cotter, Barbara Sweeny
Kids:  Marie, Meg, Barbara, Silpa,
Coffee Time:  Please consider stopping by a bit early, bringing a goodie to share, or staying after to help with clean up!

End of March Connection

Hello! Hope you are looking forward to a restful weekend after a busy week.   Plan to include church in your weekend plans!  Please keep these things in mind over the coming days and weeks.

Saturday morning at 9:30 is the next Women’s Book Study meeting.  Gather in the Ruth Room across from the office.  Please read Chapter 4 in your book in preparation.

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00.  Looking forward to seeing many of you at that time!  Last Sunday we were treated to wonderful, uplifting and sacred music from our choir and a special guest trumpet player.  What a blessing!  A special word of thanks to Steve for his leadership in the choir!    Sunday worship is a great jumping off point for the week ahead.  Please  be here as we spend time together in prayer, praise, music and hear an encouraging message from Pastor Kevin.  Kids Connection and Nursery are both in place for the little ones.  Coffee time follows in Veno Hall.  We will be looking for you 🙂

Council members are reminded of the meeting on Monday evening at 7:00 in the Council Room.

Young Life also meets on Monday evening at 7:27.  Meg has been posting some great videos of Young Life fun times from Monday’s get-togethers!  Check with Meg on how you can see those.

Thank you to those who have dropped off grocery gift cards in the past few weeks.  This is an ongoing need.  If you are interested in helping out with this, $25.00 gift cards to Shaws or Big Y are appreciated.

Young Life Capernaum is Young Life’s ministry to teens with disabilities, and it will be sponsoring its annual Talent Night here at the church Saturday April 8th. The goal is to raise money for the camp scholarship fund for teens with disabilities and their high school peer mentors/buddies to go to summer camp in Virginia. Tickets are $5.  If you or someone you know might be interested in sponsoring the event through an advertisement in the event program, contact Meg Nelson at faithfulmeg@yahoo.com by March 26th.  There’s quarter page ads starting at $25, half page ads at $50, and full page ads for $100.   This is a fun night where our typical Young Life High School teens, Capernaum teens, Wyld Life Middle Schoolers, and Young Life leaders all come together for a great celebration, it would be great to see our church well represented as a host location!

Did you hear the news?  Did you get the word?  We will be sponsoring an Easter Sunrise Service on Easter morning (April 16th) at 6:30 right across from the church on the Norwood Common!  If you have never been to a Sunrise Service, you want to plan now on being there.  No need to get all dressed up in your Easter best!  Roll out of bed and come and share in this special time as we celebrate the empty tomb.  And to make it even better, we will be having breakfast here at the church!  Hot coffee, pancakes, eggs and I’m pretty sure bacon may be on the menu!  Yippee!    These activities don’t happen magically though – we need your help to make this a successful outreach to our community.  We will also need help with serving breakfast and with clean-up.   The ladies from WISH have volunteered to get the tables set, the day before.  THANK YOU!  Here is the time frame.  Sunrise Service at 6:30am; Breakfast begins at the church at about 7:15; Clean-up begins at about 8:15.  This leaves plenty of time to still be here for Easter Celebration worship at 10:00.  This is all going to be publicized in a variety of ways BUT the best publicity is you!  Mention this to your friends, people you work with or run into at the store.  Word of mouth is the best advertisement.  Look for the sign-up sheet  in the coming weeks.  I will leave it on the table in the narthex as you come into the sanctuary.  You can also contact the office if you have any questions or want to volunteer to help out.  THANK YOU!

We are looking forward to hosting the Southern Gospel Concerts this year!  The “go-to” spot for information will be the bulletin board in the Welcome Center.  The first concert is not until Sunday, April 23rd.  Concerts are at 6:00pm.  Tickets are available at the door and are also able to be purchased ahead of time.  Watch the bulletin board for details.

Look for an insert in next Sunday’s bulletin regarding Easter flowers for the sanctuary.
